Ever pay $100 to rent a 10’x10′ worn out piece of carpet? How about $100 for a folding chair?
Convention Exhibitors and Attendees expect to pay more at a hotel or convention center. For example: I paid $10 for a beer at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, in New York. So I asked why so much? The convention bartender answered, “It’s the convention price.”
Hotels and convention centers know that most people will pay a high price. That same pricing philosophy applies to technology rentals like projectors and plasma TV flat panel displays.
In-House AV Service Companies Charge up to 100% Markup or even More!
Hotels and convention centers often have an “In-house AV service company.” They charge a rate that is substantially higher than rates charged by a Tech Travel Agent©.
Crappy Equipment at a Higher Price
Hotels and convention centers have a ‘captured audience’ and can charge higher rental rates. After all, who else can help? Often times that rate can be as much as 100% higher! You are paying for the convenience of the hotel or convention AV service. Warning: don’t depend on the hotel to have the equipment you need. Often times, in-house AV equipment is in less than optimum repair. That’s because a hotel does not have a tech shop that can keep sensitive AV equipment properly stored and adjusted. They often have a little closet where they store things.
Example of a Possible Bad Convention Center
There currently are 4 ‘Official’ vendors servicing Jacob Javitz and 40+ “Unofficial” vendors who are ready to serve this US based Convention market. (This is America, right? Free market and all)
If you rent a plasma flat screen from an Official Jacob Javitz Vendor, you are likely to pay double the price over what these 40 other companies would charge. Plus, where do you think the 4 ‘official’ vendors get their inventory and extra labor? That’s right, from the 40 ‘unofficial’ av technology companies. The convention center want’s its cut and gets it because they try to channel all transactions through their ‘Official’ Vendors.
I’m not saying Jacob Javits is bad or doing anything wrong, but…. the tactics a bad convention center would employ may be considered anti-competitive because of ‘exclusive dealings’ and some agreements can even utilize collusion to get the deal done.
